Features:
Adium was one of the first Instant Messengers I installed on my Mac... it seems like forever ago now.. but it can't be :) How I stumbed across it I have no idea but I'm really pleased I did as it's now one of my favourites... mostly because I can log in to the Yahoo! Network with it... I know you can with many others too.. but the appeal at the time was Yahoo!
Adium reminds me of Trillian, it offers a one stop shop.. or rather connectivity... for most of the major IM players but Adium seems to go one step further.. in fact many steps further as after hitting their About page I soon realised that Adium has pretty much all the major bases covered that I have been interested in or used:
- AIM
- ICQ
- Jabber which includes Google Talk
- MSN Messenger
- Yahoo! Messenger
but it doesn't stop there as it also supports QQ, Bonjour (iChat), Gadu-Gadu, LiveJournal, Novell Groupwise, Lotus Sametime.
One of the great things I love about Adium is tabbed Messaging... Adium does this extremely well as you can run multiple tabbed sessions e.g. one session may have all your friends in it, one family and other someone who wish to give your (almost) full attention too and you can even drag the tabs into any order that best suits you.. simply brilliant! File Transfer (limited) is supported but what currently isn't is voice and webcam.. fingers crossed it wont be long before it's offered :) but back to what is.. Adium has a wide variety of translations available, Message History (archiving) is supported, Off The Record Messaging (see cypherpunks - otr), you can set status messages by group and you can personalise Adium up one side and down the other with look, feel, sound events etc.
I haven't dared to venture into too many of the features that Adium offers yet, let alone the Xtras which look right up my alley... mostly because I'm still trying to work out how my Adium dock icon is purple *blush*... but over the next few weeks I'll start plonking around to see what's on offer and what's not but speaking of what's not, I guess the only down side to using Adium is that as at v1.0.1 has no voice or video support but to me that's no big deal as alot of the big boys don't have it either.
